Rain jackets & shells

Rain jackets and shells keep out rain and wind as the outer layer of a layering system, usually with a waterproof, breathable membrane or coating and taped seams. Lighter, more packable shells suit occasional showers, while three-layer fabrics generally stand up better to pack straps and frequent use. Check that the hood adjusts to your head, or over a helmet, and that the cut leaves room for layers underneath.
