The North Face was founded in 1966 in San Francisco by Douglas Tompkins and Susie Tompkins Buell, starting as a shop that supplied climbers. VF Corporation acquired the company in 2000, and its headquarters moved from Alameda, California, to Denver, Colorado, in 2020.
Its range includes rain and insulated jackets, fleece, hiking trousers, hiking boots and shoes, backpacks, tents and sleeping bags. For trail running it makes VECTIV shoes and Summit Series run vests. The North Face is listed among bluesign's system partner brands.
