Smith was founded in 1965 by orthodontist Bob Smith, who developed a double-lens ski goggle, and was based in Ketchum, Idaho, from the early 1970s until 2015. The Italian eyewear group Safilo has owned the brand since 1996, and Smith's headquarters, home to its product development, design and engineering teams, is in Portland, Oregon.
For skiing and ski touring, Smith makes snow goggles and snow helmets; for cycling it offers mountain bike, road and gravel helmets as well as bike goggles. The range also includes sport and lifestyle sunglasses and prescription eyewear. Its lens options include the brand's ChromaPop and photochromic lenses.
