MSR (Mountain Safety Research) was founded in Seattle in 1969 by engineer and mountaineer Larry Penberthy, initially to test and improve the safety of climbing equipment. Cascade Designs acquired the brand in 2001, and MSR is based in Seattle, Washington.
Its range covers backpacking, mountaineering and four-season tents, liquid-fuel and canister stoves, cookware, water filters and purifiers, snowshoes, avalanche probes and backcountry poles. MSR builds its snowshoes in its own factories, including a European factory in Midleton, Ireland.
