ASICS is a Japanese sportswear company that traces its origins to a sports shoe business set up by Kihachiro Onitsuka in Kobe in 1949. ASICS Corporation was formed in 1977 through a merger, is listed on the Tokyo stock exchange and is headquartered in Kobe; it also owns the Onitsuka Tiger brand.
Alongside its road running and court shoes, ASICS makes trail running shoes, including the Trabuco, GEL-Trabuco Terra, GEL-Venture and GEL-Sonoma lines, and running jackets, among them waterproof and packable models in its FUJITRAIL trail collection. The company name is an acronym of the Latin phrase 'anima sana in corpore sano'.
